Pay Cuts.
My employer has announced proposals that they want to cut our pay by 37%.
Most of the staff are long termers and its looks as though Industrial Action is our only option.

Anyone have similar experiences ?

Re: Pay Cuts.
Well is stand by my point that they aren't paying enough, that the complex web of allowances and Ltd company status (off-setting an individuals' own personal tax and NI obligations against Corporation Tax payments) means that they only pay a fraction of what they should.

Why should an international businessman be allowed to offset the cost of operating a private jet, merely because he chooses to fly that way, whereas a PAYE employee cannot offset the cost of a home computer, even though they might have to do work from home in an evening or at weekends?

Re: Pay Cuts.
Over buyer,

There's probably an example from the top one percent of someone not paying their fair share. I don't know the tax arrangements of every single person in the uk.

But my point stands.

The top 1% pay 25% of the income tax. The 45p rate raises more money than the 40p rate under labour did. The idea that the rich aren't paying any taxes is a complete straw man.

Now if you're saying there's more the government can do to clampdown on tax avoidance, I'd agree with you. The government has been going after tax avoidance and there's a lot of good work since 2010 in reducing tax avoidance but I'm sure more can be done.

Re: Pay Cuts.
My point is that they are only paying 45% of the earnings they choose to declare, or are advised to declare, as taxable.

Do you honestly think that all of the top 1% pay 45% of what they actually, really earn?

You throw statistics into every debate and at every opportunity, but you don't see the reality of the figures behind the statistics.

I'm not sure what point you are trying to make.

Yes there are rich people. Those rich people are funding more of our public services than you are.

If your point is on tax avoidance, I've been pretty clear but let me spell it out for you.

I have no time for tax avoidance what so ever.

Joke whole,

Again I'm not sure what point you're trying to make. The bank levy raises money for our public services. That's a good thing.

How many years did labour have a tax rate higher than 40p in government?

45p is higher than 40p and the 45p rate raises more money than the 50p rate did.

The top 1% pay 25% of all the income tax in this country.

You've written your own damning admission of how perversely unequal this country has become - 1% of people stuffing so much money away that their own tax bills are grotesquely huge.

These are people that have off-shore banking interests with highly paid accountants squirreling away money in complex arrangements.

What you failed to say is that they, and the next 10% of high earners are being shamed into paying up, not because they feel any kind of moral obligation, but because a few high profile people have been found out and have been humiliated into paying up.

Then you get some out of touch spokesperson piping up about 'everyone has the right to use these tax arrangements, just ask your accountant'

Ask your accountant?

How many people in this country have ever used an accountant? Very few have, because most people in this country are PAYE employed, and accept what is deducted from their wages.

Id like to know how many people have started up cosy little Ltd companies to cut back on their payment of tax and NI, not because its a genuine Ltd company, but because its a front for one person to do highly paid work and avoid paying a fair amount of tax AND National Insurance.

I'm trying to see a direct positive link between the bank levy and those at the bottom of the wage/social structure.

Help me out here. After8. How has the imposition of the former helped the latter?

You haven't given us much information in the OP - just the size of the pay cut.

Did they not offer any explanation? That seems unusual.

In any case a pay cut of this magnitude signals that the company is one step away from insolvency, so really what they are offering you is an option: either (a) a large pay cut but the company stays afloat or (b) the company closes down.

It seems to me entirely fair and reasonable that before they shut down and call in a liquidator they should give you that choice. You can either accept it or reject it, that's up to you.

If the company is right on the edge, industrial action is effectively the same as (b). You are voting for the closure of the company and the loss of your jobs.

I'm sorry your company is in such a state but it happens every day. There are tens of thousands of companies closing every year. I am sincerely hoping that I can drive all three of my major competitors into bankruptcy and I would absolutely love it if they sent out a 37% pay cut memorandum to all their staff. That is how the market works. Creative destruction.

So David Cameron's plea for employers to start giving pay raises worked well in this case eh? :-)

I would suggest that your consistent evangelising about the tories without any particularly credible information to back it up may be the source of your problem.

I'm not overly bothered but I can see why equally blinkered people on here might shit their pants over it.

So your boy Cameron - what's he thinking about swerving the TV debates then? Proper muggy move that innit?

I am happy to debate people based on the facts but quite often I just get attacked for no good reason. Ray earlier today threw his toys out of the pram.

I have been critical of the government before and will continue to be.

I have also been critical of my party, even today right here on WHO.

You appear desperate to shoehorn in some kind of positive spin on this government's pretty poor showing.

I dont understand blind party loyalty, its as if you dont want what's best for the country or something?

Tax avoidance clampdowns? Surely that's just paying the tax that they should have been paying all along?

Bank levy? A fine for illegal behaviour that means none of the scumbags who have defrauded the British people have to do time? Yeah, sounds very harsh.

45p tax rate, down from 50p?? How is that an increase?
